What is an anxiety disorder?

We all deal with anxiety on a regular basis and it's really hard to find a person who has not experienced the feeling of worry, dread of fear when taking a serious exam, performing an important task, going to a job interview or simply doing things that are of a high priority and importance. Anxiety is a natural response to situations when the person feels that there's any risk to his or her integrity and well-being. Quite often, anxiety also helps us perform at the top of our abilities, using our body's and mind's hidden reserves in order to cope with the situation. But that's normal anxiety.

When speaking about anxiety disorders, we are analyzing the same response characterized by fear, dread, and even panic, in circumstances that seemingly don't pose any threat at all. For example, people suffering from social anxiety disorders experience uncontrolled fear and dread in normal situations such as walking in the city or shopping at the mall. This happens because the mechanism responsible for the flight or fight response (associated with normal anxiety) starts malfunctioning and gets triggered in wrong situations. Normally, it is triggered by circumstances that have direct impact or threat to personal wellbeing or life. However, when certain chemicals are imbalanced this mechanism becomes associated with harmless everyday situations.

There are different types of anxiety disorders, which are primarily characterized by the circumstances triggering the anxiety respond. Some of the most common types of anxiety disorders include general anxiety, social anxiety, different types of phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, among many others. If you experience abnormal anxiety in situations other people don't see any threat in, consult with a doctor and it's quite likely that you will need a course of treatment.
